Jane Baker, RM, BScM

My passion for birth started with the births of my two most beautiful children, Cailleigh and Daniel. They were both very different birth experiences, the significant difference being the support I received during the second birth. I believe that at that moment I was called to assist women and their families experience an empowered and personal birth experience.

While my children were small, I was involved with the "birth community" in various capacities. As part of my training I was a leader applicant with La Leche League, Nadine and I ran a successful company called Kindred Spirits, where we provided doula care and childbirth education. And I was involved with the consumer organization Birth Unlimited (www.birthunlimited.ca) as volunteer, president and finally, executive director.

My formal midwifery education was obtained through the Utah College of Midwifery where I completed a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, and through internships with Sharyne Fraser RM and Birth Partnership. I was thrilled when my internship turned into a placement with Patty and Arlette as I became registered in 2001.

The birth of a family is a miracle to behold. Being invited to watch the joy and wonder as a family welcomes a new life is an honour. Midwifery is gives back to me in so many ways. I have many warm memories of the families that have included me in this wondrous time of their lives.

Now, I am delighted to practice midwifery with my best friend Nadine. Nadine and I went through midwifery school together and dreamed of one day practising together. I am grateful that that dream has come to fruition.
